JOSÉ DE UDAETA
Va néixer el 27 de maig de 1919 a Barcelona, procedent d‘una família de l’alta burgesia catalana. Paral·lelament als seus estudis de medicina va prendre classes de dansa de forma clandestina. Les seves primeres presentacions com a ballarí clàssic i modern les fa sota pseudònim. La seva carrera va destacar com a ballarí, coreògraf, professor, expert en castanyoles i autor, durant 50 anys. José de Udaeta va morir el 14 de setembre de 2009 a Barcelona.
COREòGRAF – Són diverses les companyies de ballet i òperes de diferents ciutats les que han contractat José de Udaeta com a coreògraf, entre altres: el Harkness Ballet de Nova York, l’Òpera Real d’Estocolm i la Companyia de Ballet de Dallas, als Estats Units. El 1985 va crear les coreografies de les danses flamenques per a l’òpera “Carmen”, posada en escena per Herbert von Karajan amb el Ballet Espanyol de Madrid al Festival de Salzburg. Des de 1993 es va fer càrrec de les coreografies de dansa per al Ballet de Cambra Espanyol Arsis.
MESTRE – Comença la seva activitat com a pedagog el 1957 a l’Acadèmia Internacional de Dansa de Colònia, on dóna classes de dansa espanyola i castanyoles fins al 1979. El 1973 creà a Sitges els Cursos Internacionals d’Estiu per a la Dansa Espanyola que se celebren durant 22 anys, fins a arribar a ser la institució més important del món per a iniciats en dansa espanyola. Als anys 80 actua com a lector i ensenya la tècnica de les castanyoles en algunes de les més destacades universitats dels Estats Units.Des de 1977 va ensenyar a tocar les castanyoles de concert segons el mètode d’Emma Maleras, especialment en els centres de ballet d’Alemanya.
CONCERTISTA DE CASTANYOLES – Va començar la seva carrera de concertista de castanyoles als 57 anys i va estudiar i aprofundir la tècnica d’Emma Maleras. Des de llavors va donar nombrosos concerts amb composicions pròpies tant a Europa com als Estats Units, acomodant la música de Vivaldi, J.S.Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Debussy, fins Scott Joplin i els compositors espanyols clàssics, des d’Albéniz fins a Rodrigo. El dirigent Herbert von Karajan el va convidar com a solista al Festival de Salzburg. Amb les seves castanyoles va acompanyar la soprano Montserrat Caballé en les seves vetllades de concerts a la Scala de Milà i a l’Òpera de Covent Garden, Londres, el 1977. Més endavant en diverses òperes a Alemanya, Escandinàvia i Estats Units. Des de 1979 actua de forma regular com a artista convidat en els Festivals de Ludwigsburg, on presenta programes nous com a solista i també acompanyat per diferents grups.
PREMIS – El 1987 li va ser atorgat el Premi Nacional Alemany de Dansa. L’any 1989 va rebre la Medalla de Plata de les Belles Arts. El 1995 es va honrar l’artista amb el Premi Nacional de la Dansa de Catalunya. L’any 2000 Barcelona el va premiar amb la Medalla d’Or al Mèrit per les Arts. El 2001 va rebre el major mèrit que atorga el seu país, la Creu de Sant Jordi.

Cor de Castanyoles Emma Maleras
Es va crear l’any 1991 per iniciativa d’un grup d’alumnes d’Emma Maleras. Amb el temps, han iniciat una etapa d’experimentació incorporant diferents ritmes i estils musicals, que han permès crear noves formes d’expressió i potenciar les possibilitats que té aquest petit instrument, tan popular i desconegut alhora.Tots els components del cor han estudiat amb el mètode per a castanyoles Maleras. Fruit d’això és la compenetració que demostren en totes les seves interpretacions. Han actuat en nombrosos teatres i auditoris, amb concerts tant per Espanya com per diferents països, com ara Suïssa o Alemanya.Des de la seva creació, la direcció artística i musical del grup ha anat a càrrec de Consol Grau.
